If you are lucky enough have a free day in NYC and you're missing the game, then head over to Staten Island Silver Lake Golf Course "The Working Man's Country Club". This stunning golf course is located at 915 Victory Boulevard, Staten Island. It's a par 70 for Men and 72 for Ladies and around 6,304 yards in length from the back Tees, no mater your golfing abilities you will enjoy your time here.
You can hop on the free famous Staten Island ferry from Battery Park, Lower Manhattan , a gentle 25 mins sail takes you passed the iconic Statue of Liberty, Governors Island and Ellis Island and you get to catch the amazing NYC skyline at its best.
Once on Staten Island the course is around a 10 minute Uber ride away costing around $10/£8 , there is plenty of shopping at Empire Outlets , a newly renovated shopping precinct next to the ferry terminal for those who don't golf.
On arrival to the course we were met by very friendly staff who showed us around and guided us inside to order some lunch from the aply named Veranda Restaurant. As it was a brillant summers day we ate lunch on their terrace over looking the 1st hole and 10th hole.
After food we walked over to the well stocked Golf Shop where we picked up our rented clubs for $25/£20 bought some golf balls & tees and a few memento's of our trip. We decided since it was a hilly course we would rent a couple of golf carts for $40/£30 which was an excellent idea as it gave us some shelter from the heat. Picked up our score card and a very informative yardage book.
We booked our round a few days prior using their online booking system which was very easy to do, we would highly recomend this due to the popularity of the course as tee times fill up quickly, prices vary depending on the time of day. It's always better to check the website prior to any visit.
The 1st and 10 th tees play from pretty much the same area which is overlooked from the terrace, with that in mind the starter is able to start people off either on the front nine or back nine keeping a nice flow to the speed of play.
The course offers 18 holes and the grass is beautifully maintained with a nice ballance of water hazzards , trees , bunkers and generous rough and of course the beautiful lake. The greens were lightening fast which took a bit of getting used but added to the fun.
A superb ballance of tricky par 3s , inviting par 4s and long par 5s made for a lovely afternoon of golf.
If you ever find yourself in that part of the world in need off a golf fix , we would highly recomend a visit to Silver Lake Golf Course.
Thankyou to all the staff who made a day to remember.
